LACEY, Wash. (Sept. 30, 2008) – A local company specializing in the development and distribution of scientifically-validated natural health products has answered the call for help in areas of Louisiana and Texas hardest hit by Hurricanes Ike and Gustav where relief workers are still dealing with large numbers of people with no reliable source of food.
Univera, working with Nourish America (www.nourishamerica.org), a non-profit organization that provides foods and nutritional supplements to the hungry and needy, in September sent $73,151.10 worth of its signature Essentials nutritional beverage, to ministries in both Houston and Chauvin, La.
Essentials was designed as a meal in a bottle, providing the proper protein, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids in a natural berry blend sweetened with Xylitol. Each box contains 20 bottles.
According to Nourish America, young victims of both hurricanes are still coming to school desperate for food as their families continue to struggle with power outages and sanitation issues as they rebuild from the devastation.
"Univera has stepped forward with an extremely generous donation of Essentials to help the survivors of Hurricane Ike. In Northwest Houston, power is slowly returning but the poor and low income in that rural area have been out of work and are very short on nutritious foods. This donation of Essentials helps these survivors regain important nutrient support as they face the long recovery process. We greatly appreciate Univera's generosity during this time of need." Nourish American Executive Director Michael Morton said.
Univera is confident that the Essentials product will help to combat hunger while providing the youngest hurricane victims with the proper nutrition they need as the infrastructure of these devastated areas are rebuilt. Through its non-profit efforts called Serve First (www.servefirst.org), the company in 2006, launched The Ruleville Project in 2006 in Ruleville, Miss., where it donated enough Essentials to supply elementary school children with two servings per day. School administrators, over the next two years, noticed dramatic decreases in number of sick days absent from school, as the children were receiving the proper nutrition that many of them lacked in this impoverished area of the country.
About Serve First™:
Univera Serve First (www.servefirst.org) is a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing hunger among the most vulnerable in America, Canada and around the world. Its past efforts included providing nutritional support for schoolchildren in rural Louisiana and young refugees in northern Thailand. The effort is rooted in the humanitarian concerns of Univera founder Bill Lee in working to serve those who live on the margins – the underprivileged and often forgotten members of our communities.
